What did you want to be growing up and why?
Growing up as a kid I wanted to be a lawyer because I felt that there was so much social injustice in the world and I wanted to defend those who didn’t have a voice.
Favorite Time of Year and Why?
December is my favorite time of the year. I enjoy decking the halls. I love cozying up to watch Christmas movies with a cup of cocoa (may or may not be spiked). I love taking a walk or a drive and enjoy all the lights and holiday décor. For me, it’s just such a magical time of the year and love spending it with my loved ones.
About Mayra:
I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I am one of 5 children and the first to graduate college. I attended California State University of Long Beach (CSULB) where I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, and a Bachelor of Arts in Chicano Latino Studies. After graduating college, I lived in Irvine for 9 years before moving back to L.A. I have an amazing 7-year-old daughter named Grace. I enjoy doing DIY projects around the house and in my free time, I love visiting museums, going on hikes, exploring new cities, and watching movies at home.
What working at the Delhi has meant to you:
I first found out about Delhi Center in 2009 while at CSULB. As part of my Senior Colloquium, I helped support community engagement and leadership training projects, and one of those projects involved Delhi Center. Working at Delhi has allowed me to engage with the community, build relationships with clients. community partners and the Santa Ana Unified School District , and most importantly, make an impact in the lives of the families we serve. I would say that one of my strengths is my willingness to serve and ability to create sincere and organic connections with individuals. Part of my job at Delhi Center is to advocate for my clients, but I always try to go a step further and help build their capacity and equip them with the tools they need so they too can advocate for themselves, their families and community.
Favorite Event, Activity, or Program the Delhi Offers and Why:
My favorite event that Delhi Center offers is our annual Holiday Toy Giveaway. Not only does it provide gifts to many children that otherwise would not receive any, but it also showcases the generosity of those who donate the toys, and the hard work, passion and dedication of the Delhi Center staff that put on the event every year.
